Short strips, long timber
Sawmills generate short strips faster than anyone wants to store them. Finger-joint adhesive splices those strips into full-length engineered sections, with joint strength reaching 85-100 percent of the same solid stock. A Jiangsu laminated-timber plant converted the roughly 200 tonnes of offcuts it used to discard into value-added structural stock within a season.
Two grades for two presses
Buyers choose between a two-part PVAc-plus-isocyanate grade blended 100:15 with a 20-30 minute open time and high initial grab for high-frequency presses, and a one-part moisture-curing polyurethane that goes on straight from the pail with a 10-15 minute open time for cold pressing. Both are 100 percent solids, carry no added formaldehyde and meet EPA guidance. At 20 C and 1.0-1.5 MPa the bond reaches handling strength in 3-10 seconds, so a line runs continuously rather than in clamped batches.
Strength and weather on the joint line
To ASTM D-4688 on beech fingers the limit tensile strength hits 85-100 percent of clear wood, and 90 percent of failures land in the timber rather than the bondline. To EN 204 D4 the joint shrugs off rain, opening the door to glulam, window stock and exterior structural work. One line can finger-joint around 10 tonnes of short stock a day.

Where the speed stacks up
On a high-frequency line the 3-10 second grab is what converts a batch process into a continuous one, so short stock feeding in becomes long, flat stock coming out at a rate a cold press cannot match. The D4 rating pushes the output beyond interior mouldings into glulam beams, door and window blank and exterior structural members that see weather. Because the bond is formaldehyde-free and 100 percent solids, the finished timber carries the low-emission credentials buyers ask for. Tooling and press parameters are tuned per line during trial runs.
