UV-Curing Wood Coatings

Air-dry lacquer needs hours; these UV-Curing Wood Coatings crosslink in 3–5 seconds under a mercury or LED lamp and run near 100% solids, so VOC emissions are almost nil. A Shandong flooring line that produced 1,000 m² a day with PU jumped to 5,000 m² a day after switching to this system. Flat panels, flooring and machined furniture parts moving down an automated coater are where the throughput pays back, and lower energy use plus near-zero emissions ease the environmental-permit load on the plant.

The formulation is built on epoxy-acrylate and urethane-acrylate oligomers with TMPTA and HDDA reactive diluents and 184 / TPO photoinitiators. It pours clear-to-straw at a tunable 500–3000 mPa·s and is roll-, curtain- or spray-applied. Cumulative energy of 150–300 mJ/cm² from a 365/395 nm lamp finishes the cure. Sealer and sanding sealer sit under full-gloss, semi-matte and matte topcoats, giving a level base so thin coats build cleanly, and cooler LED lamps protect thin veneers and edge-wrapped profiles.

At a 30 m/min line speed FTIR monitors double-bond conversion above 95%, so panels stack seconds after the lamp. Pencil hardness reaches 2H–3H; a 500 g / 1000-cycle steel-wool pass leaves no mark, and coffee, red wine and alcohol resist 24 hours. A cycloaliphatic epoxy-acrylate plus stabilisers keeps QUV-500-hour yellowing under ΔE 1.5 for pale decor.
